In Southern Colorado, the sun and snow cycles, in addition to rugged terrain and extreme temperature changes, require equipment that is versatile and reliable. Often underrated when compared to other winter gear, cold-weather boots are essential to anyone exposed to a four-season climate. LOWA's Trident GTX insulated snow boots are an excellent choice for winter hiking, snowshoeing or just navigating icy streets andsidewalks.
Cold feet and frozen toes can quickly ruin your day, so winter footwear options should not be taken lightly. LOWA's Trident snow boots are temperature rated down to 5°F and incorporate a Gore-Tex waterproof, breathable membrane and a Partelana wool and polyester fleece lining. Put more simply -- your feet will stay warm, dry and cozy. And if you're snowshoeing or hiking around, you're most likely working up a sweat, so a waterproof, breathable membrane like that of the Trident's is key to prevent cold-and-clammy swamp foot inside your boot.
The exterior of the boot is designed to maximize stability and support for a variety of winter activities. LOWA's Crystal sole offers superior traction in slick or icy conditions with a narrower fit to accommodate any snowshoe bindings, making them versatile as well as rugged. These boots performed well while snowshoeing in Colorado's Northern San Juan Mountains, while also being subjected to variable conditions at lower elevations around Durango in early winter.
Warm temperatures in November quickly melted this winter's early snowfall, making Slime Gulch (as it is locally known) the perfect testing ground for LOWA's Trident boots. The boots performed well in less-than-optimal muddy and icy conditions and we were able to navigate the slime while remarkably remaining in an upright position.
For snowshoeing in deep conditions, a pair of gaiters is recommended. Although these boots are only available in black, the basic styling works well with any outfit.
Conditions are not always optimal at the time you choose to adventure, but your gear can and should be. Go winter hiking and snowshoeing, while enjoying the snow and mud that follows in comfort and stability. For useful, cross-functional winter gear, start off with a good pair of snow boots, like LOWA's Trident GTX, and go from there. (MSRP $199.95)
