The clumsy and once laborious task of water purification has evolved into a much easier process. Ultraviolet light is chic for water purification, and it's widely considered the gold standard. Even a behemoth like CamelBak jumped into the fray and has recently introduced a UV product.
Cheers to CamelBak for embracing the technology but last call will always go to SteriPEN, the innovator for UV filtration. I've had the chance to review the Journey a few years ago. An effective purifier, but the use of a battery just adds to the landfills. Most times, the battery will drain from inactivity, and you never fully use it's juice.

My first backcountry bath towel is embarrassing to even admit. The only positive was it was fleece and dried somewhat quickly. It was bulky and reeked after only a few uses.
Microfiber has changed the size and weight of these. And antimicrobial treatments definitely help the smell.
PackTowl from Cascade Designs and Cocoon by Design Salt recently released microfiber towels. |

In need of a freestyle board for the resort, something twin that will butter easily and have some pop? For $250, you can purchase a 2011 YES Basic Snowboard.

There are some adventurers out there who call a good time strapping skinny planks to their feet and getting towed hundreds of miles through a frozen landscape by their canine companion.
I'm not one of those people. I'm originally from Southern California, where neither cross-country skis nor sub-zero temperatures are considered fun and our water is warm and wet.

Out on the trail, having a good pair of hiking poles can make a big difference. For example, poles can make the difference between nimbly navigating a choppy talus field and limping back to the car with a swollen ankle. Or the difference between popping back up onto your snowshoes and wallowing hopelessly in fluffy unpacked powder like an overturned turtle.

A few months ago, I was in the midst of spirited hike in Boyce Mayview Park which I was quickly ascending and descending the park's ridgeline trails to push my physical limitations.
I found out, my cardio was not where it should be and that I needed to dial-down my pace. My heart was thumping out of my chest, and the Highgear Axio HR on my wrist was sending me warning signals before I got to this point. I should have listened.
